Bamberg and more time at home – Day 8 and 9 #15daysthrougheurope
So Day 8 was another day we stuck around the house because this was the day my husband returned from a 4-month training deployment in Romania – YEY! So we did some housework, did some grocery shopping, did some cooking, and spent the majority of our time at the garden store… buying supplies to make flower boxes. Because we both fell in love with every flower box we passed and decided my house NEEDED some too. And yes, they are still alive and THRIVING!! Even the roses (I am talking directly to you here mom.. no faith… none.)
The Mom: I’m impressed Paige. I love those mini rose bushes and thought they would bloom once and die. Soooo, why no pictures of our gorgeous window boxes, hint, hint…
Yeah yeah… here are a few 😛
And! Onto day 9 – Bamberg! Such a magical fairytale city! Bamberg is another city that is fairly close yet undiscovered by me. So, of course, we had to go see what there was to see. We got there and pulled right into our parking deck for the day (I am becoming a pro at this parking thing). Thanks to Paige’s proactive parking lot research days ahead and Richard (Its Robert) the TomTom. From there we wandered around the city and made our way up to the palace.
Now I had already done the research and knew going in that typically the tours of the Neue Residenz are only done in German. So I did a little research (she’s great at that) so I could play translator/tour guide for us. But when we arrived there was no one else to go on the tour and our guide told us she would be more than happy to give us the tour in English since it was only us. It ended up being our own private English tour of the palace. We were able to ask questions and learned a lot about the city too.
Now as for the actual palace – I think it is one of the better ones to go to. My favorite so far was the palace in Wurzburg, but this is a good second place. There are a number of rooms to walk through, all with a great history to go with them. I think it is well worth a visit, even if you do have to take the German tour (just do some reading before you go).

On the way out of the Residenz is probably the real treat. The rose gardens. With thousands of rose bushes, the smell and aroma alone are quite an impact. I think pictures say it all…
Once we left the gardens we walked over the St Michael’s Cathedral. It has the typical impressive architecture I have come to expect in European churches. If you are interested in art history there are also some really lovely triptychs.
After this, we walked back down the hill to go to dinner. Now… we had picked out Kachelofen and we intended to eat at Kachelofen. And we found Kachelofen… and then we sat at a table at the restaurant next door. Now you think at this point we would notice. We did not. To be fair both places have the same style picnic tables with checkered table clothes. Kachelofen has blue and the place we ate (I don’t even know the name… I think it is zum something) has red.
The waiter was super friendly and helped us translate the dishes (only German menus). We both had schnitzel because mom had never had any and well. she was in Germany. The food was great! We didn’t even realize we ate at the wrong restaurant until we were leaving and mom saw a dish come out to another table and asked what it was and our waiter said he wasn’t sure, he didn’t think they had anything like it on the menu. Opps… and there ends our day in Bamberg.
The Mom: Pictures would be nice here… 😛
A picture of me? ok
